November General Election will Elect Mayor and Three Councilmembers
City Clerk Phillip Kerns has announced that the 2020 November General Election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2020. City election polls will be opened from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Election Day. New voters must be registered on or before Monday, October 19, 2020 in order to be eligible to vote in this General Election, other than in-person registration which may take place thereafter.
Registered voters of the City will elect a Mayor for a regular two year term and three Councilmembers for four year terms each. The term of Mayor Mary Anne Ackerman and the terms of Councilmembers Bethany Bernthal Reindel, Carl Schoenow and Vickie Schmitzer will expire on December 31, 2020. Ackerman was first elected to serve as Councilmember in 2016 and was elected as Mayor in 2018. Reindel was first appointed in 2015 and subsequently elected in 2016. Schmitzer was first elected in 2007 and Schoenow was first elected in 2003.
To qualify to run for the elected position of Mayor or Councilmember, a person must meet the following three requirements: (1) Be over 25 years of age; (2) Be a registered City voter; and (3) Be a resident of the City of Frankenmuth for at least two consecutive years immediately preceding his/her election.
Kerns advised that any person wishing to seek the office of Mayor or City Councilmember must file a nominating petition with the City Clerk on forms supplied by his office. The petitions must be signed by not less than fifty (50), nor more than one hundred (100) registered voters of the City of Frankenmuth. Voters should not sign their names to a greater number of petitions for an office than the number of persons to be elected to that office. For example, voters may sign only one (1) petition for Mayor, and up to three (3) petitions for Councilmember candidates. Should a voter sign more petitions than allowed, his/her signature will be void on all the petitions that he/she signed.
Nominating petitions must be filed in the City Clerk's office, City & Township Government Center, 240 West Genesee Street, Frankenmuth, Michigan 48734-1398 by 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 21, 2020.
