Levee Construction to begin on September 16

As you may have heard, the City and the Downtown Development Authority are undertaking a large construction project that will ensure the downtown has adequate flood protection for the foreseeable future. As part of the improvements, a new Riverwalk will also be constructed.

Work will start on Monday, September 16 and may take 15 months to complete. The project is generally broken into 3 phases: Gunzenhausen to the Mill; the Mill to the Covered Bridge and the Covered Bridge to the end of the levee(generally behind the Cheese Haus). The contractor, Rohde Brothers, Inc., will begin at Gunzenhausen Street and Rosstal and work east toward Main Street. This portion of work is estimated to be completed sometime this winter. Gunzenhausen Street will be closed to through traffic from Monday, September 16 for at least two months.  During this portion of the work,  Gunzenhausen will be closed to through traffic and used for construction staging and materials storage. Work will also be performed along the river side of Gunzenhausen Street. Construction work is permitted from 7 am to 8 pm, Monday through Saturday. The City may also give the contractor permission, upon request, to work on Sundays.

We know the street closure is inconvenient but it is necessary. The contractor and the inspection team are using the former Lager Mill as a construction office, so you will see people in the parking lot and occupying the building.
